What is GEO?
GEO is the practice of making your website easy for AI assistants to read, understand, and cite. It has three layers:
- Traditional SEO — meta tags, sitemap, robots.txt, semantic HTML. AI engines still rely heavily on these signals to find and rank you.
- GEO readiness —
llms.txt, schema markup, content structured in a way an LLM can quote without misrepresenting you. - AI visibility — actually showing up in real buyer prompts on ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. This is what you ultimately measure.
Why it matters now
B2B research increasingly starts in an AI assistant. A buyer asks "best AI marketing tools for B2B in Germany" and a list of five names comes back. If your brand isn't in those five, you don't exist for that buyer — no matter how good your website is.
The shortlist has moved upstream. GEO is how you stay on it.
What actually works
A few patterns we see deliver results inside 4–8 weeks:
- Publish for the prompt, not the keyword. Buyers ask questions, not type queries. Your content should answer them directly, in your voice, with examples.
- Add
llms.txt. A single text file telling AI crawlers what to look at first. Costs ten minutes, lifts citation rates noticeably. - Use schema markup everywhere.
Organization,Product,FAQPage— every page that has structure should declare it. - Track the prompts that matter. Pick the 20–50 prompts your real buyers actually ask. Measure citations weekly. Optimize what's not working.
That last point is the one most teams skip. You can't improve what you can't measure — and AI visibility has never been measurable before.
